Image
  Kamal Nath is going out of way to prove he is not anti-Hindu MP Assembly Election Update: 14 October 2023 NK SINGH

A politician goes on princely padyatra

Image
NK SINGH “Who controls the past, controls the future. Who controls the present, controls the past.” -          George Orwell, 1984 The turbaned attendant, dressed in the palace uniform, walked in barely after we had settled in our room in the royal family’s guest house. He brought in a silver tray that carried a bottle of scotch whiskey, fine crystal glasses, ice bucket, a siphon for pumping soda and a little something to munch. As he placed three glasses on the table, we looked at him enquiringly. Only two of us were in that room --- GV Krishnan of the Times of India and myself, who used to work for Indian Express then. “Maharaj Sahib aa rahe hain,” he said gravely, bowed, and left the room. We were guests of Madhavrao Scindia, the scion of the erstwhile princely state of Gwalior and the Congress MP from Guna. He had invited us to Shivpuri for coverage of the padyatra that he planned to undertake of his constituency. ...

Image
A politician on a princely padyatra NK SINGH

  Untold Stories A Maharaja Cultivates A Culture Czarina NK SINGH

Gracious Maharaja offers gracias

Image
NK SINGH I was on cloud nine. Madhavrao Scindia was himself at the wheel. Renowned culture czarina Papul Jayakar was in the passenger seat. And we were at the back ---- yours truly and Madhu Jain, a journalist working with Sunday magazine then. The Ambassador car was hurtling from Gwalior to Shivpuri, its needle sometimes touching 100. Obviously, the scion of Gwalior’s princely family liked to live in the fast lane. Other vehicles in the carcade, some of them imported luxury cars, were finding it difficult to keep pace. Earlier, as the liveried chauffeur had pulled up outside the imposing Jaivilas Palace and opened its doors for passengers, Scindia dismissed him, asking him to come in the follow up vehicle.  Then the former prince himself opened the front passenger seat for Jayakar. He asked us to sit at the back; the driver had been shunted out to accommodate the journalists. The gracious Maharaja was being the perfect host, I thought. It was Decemb...

Feasting on the Maharaja's meal

Image
NK SINGH Madhavrao Scindia was one of the most charming political personalities of Madhya Pradesh. The scion of Gwalior’s former royal family was suave and cultured, with a twinkle in his eyes and an easy smile. Once you knew him, it was impossible to dislike him. He was also one of the wealthiest politicians of his times. The Scindia Empire was the biggest and the richest princely state in MP. They enjoyed the highest 21-gun salute under the British, a privilege they shared with only four other princes in the country. The Member of Parliament from Gwalior lived in an imposing palace and flew a chopper, making his election campaigns irresistible to journalists looking for colourful copy and glamour quotient in an otherwise drab landscape. That is how I landed in the one-horse town of Dabra, near Gwalior, early that winter morning in 1998. I was working for India Today then. My photo journalist colleague Sharad Saxena accompanied me on that trip. We had left our...

Untold Stories How to share a royal meal NK SINGH

Image
Mysterious death of Scindia supporter NK SINGH

Scindia's Vikas Congress gets a drubbing

Image
NK SINGH Ill-luck continues to dog Madhavrao   Scindia and he is sulking once again. The reason: his plans to emerge as the regional boss of Madhya Pradesh went awry when his party, the Madhya Pradesh Vikas Congress (MPVC), scored a duck in the recent by-elections in the state.   Scindia was so confident about the MPVC's chances that he had told his confidants he was not interested in rejoining the Congress. But after his party's poor showing in the by-elections, he readily gave his nod when the Congress president, Sitaram Kesri, sounded him out on merging the MPVC with the parent party.  And one man who is evidently thrilled with the turn of events in the state is Chief Minister Digvijay Singh. After the results came in, an elated Digvijay is reported to have said: "Scindia may still be the king in Gwalior but his writ does not run all over Madhya Pradesh."

Image

Kamal Nath & Scindia need a makeover

Image
NK SINGH Arjun Singh became the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh for the first time in 1980 with the help of Kamal Nath, then 33 and a good friend of Sanjay Gandhi. Shivbhanu Singh Solanki, a tribal leader, had polled more votes than Singh in the elections for leadership of the Congress legislature party. Then something amazing happened. Nath ‘transferred’ his votes to Singh, reducing Solanki’s majority to minority! It was a well-scripted move, approved by Sanjay Gandhi, then heir apparent of Congress party, to help Singh. Nath was doing what he had been asked to do. In a repeat performance 13 years later, Kamal Nath, then a minister of state in Narasimha Rao government, helped Digvijay Singh become the chief minister in 1993. The drama enacted before the CLP election has become a political folklore ---- a classic case of Machiavellian intrigues. With Arjun Singh’s covert blessing, Nath threw his lot with Digvijay Singh at the last moment, flummoxing rival groups of ...
