NK SINGH You’ve got to give credit where it’s due. When jails in Madhya Pradesh were getting too overcrowded, the state Government decided sensibly to build more jails to accommodate the prisoners. The next logical step would have been to shift some prisoners to the new jails.  But wait a minute-you’re asking for too much now. You can’t expect governments to sensibly all the time. So that’s where it stands. As many as 67 new prisons, constructed between 1983 and 1988 at a cost of Rs 40 crore, still remain unoccupied. Meanwhile, the state’s jails are bursting at the seams-against their capacity of 18,000 prisoners, they now accommodate 24,500 inmates.  In some jails, like the one at Jagadalpur in Bastar district, the number of prisoners is almost three times its capacity. Qureshi made the state Government stop giving its advertisements last month to the Bhaskar group, the largest-selling newspaper chain in the state.  There is no formal order to that effect, but payments totalling Rs.8 lakh for the advertisements published in the group's nine newspapers have also been withheld. Their crime? They carried two news items that did not show the Governor and one of his advisers A.K. Pandya in a good light.   The Government action also includes stopping advertisements to Bhaskar ' s English daily National Mail , which had not even carried the reports. NK SINGH The swanky bicycle stand, made of eye-catching green and grey plastic, reminds me of the neighbourhood puncture repair- wallah of our childhood. He would not only repair bicycles but also give it on hire to those who did not possess one. Within no time his fleet expanded from two to 20 and thereafter he opened his own bicycle shop. The  Madhya  Pradesh Government also decided to give bicycles on hire. Last year it spent Rs three crore of taxpayers’ money on importing 350 state of the art bicycles from Germany and erecting 92 smart docking yards at prominent locations across  Bhopal . Besides, it spent a few crores on laying a  brand new  track exclusively for bikers. Each smart bicycle cost about Rs 70,000 – equivalent to one year’s average income of citizens. मुख्यमंत्री से उद्घाटन के इंतजार में तैयार पुल बंद NK SINGH झांसी घाट में नर्मदा नदी पर 1.70 करोड़ रू. की लागत से बना पुल लोगों के रोष का सबब बन गया है। पिछले मार्च में मध्य प्रदेश के नरसिंहपुर जिले में बना यह पुल इटारसी और जबलपुर के बीच 320 किमी लंबे रास्ते पर है, जिसका शिलान्यास 1976 में हुआ और निर्माण कार्य 1986 में शुरू  हुआ। यह अभी भी यातायात के लिए औपचारिक रूप से खुलना है। वजहः मुख्यमंत्री सुन्दरलाल पटवा अभी इसका उद्घाटन करने का वक्त नहीं निकाल पाए है। पर लोग इंतजार नहीं कर सके। ट्रक, बस, कार - जो भी इससे जा सकते थे - जाने लगे। पूर्व इंका सांसद अजय मुशरान ने तो इसका उद्घाटन ही कर डाला। जैसा कि वे कहते हैं, ‘‘तैयार पुल को बंद रखना हास्यास्पद ही है।" इससे सत्तारूढ़ पार्टी इतनी परेशान हो गई कि उसने जिला प्रशासन  को पुल पर यातायात प्रतिबंधित करने का हुक्म दे दिया। और जब लोग नहीं माने तो पुलिस तैनात कर दी गई। इस खबर के लिखे जाते समय पुल को जोड़ने वाली सड़क काट दी गई थी। भाजपा विधायक अंचल सोनकर कहते हैं, ‘‘मुख्यमंत्री ने पुल का उद्घाटन करने का वादा किया है। और ...

NK SINGH MP Government has just passed the death sentence on Bhopal's Upper Lake. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has instructed officers to regularise all illegal colonies in the State. There are about 350 illegal colonies in Bhopal alone, quite a few in the Upper Lake's catchment area. Do we care? NK SINGH Finally, the BJP regime’s radical endeavour curtailing MLAs’ rights to ask questions and move no-confidence motion against government in MP vidhan sabha could last less than a week. The speaker of state assembly has practically rescinded the amended rules that had become effective only on March 15. The amendment banned legislators from raising enquiries about communal riots, sensitive incidents, confidential matters and any question that might encourage secessionism. It also curtailed effectively their right to move no confidence motion against government. The opposition had described the amendments to rules of assembly procedure as an abortive “attempt to stifle democracy”. Speaker Sitasharan Sharma announced this week that he was sending back the controversial amendments for reconsideration to assembly’s rules and ethics committee. NK SINGH  Rajendra Namdeo was a small time politician in the temple town of Maihar, Madhya Pradesh, until a few months ago. Then talent spotters of BJP discovered this uncut diamond in the run up to Maihar assembly by-election.  They promptly set about luring him to their side with trappings of power – in this case, a cosy government position with the title of minister of state. Namdeo allowed himself to be roped in. At the time of writing, Namdeo is on the run after Bhopal police registered a molestation case against him on a complaint filed by an acid attack victim.  BJP dropped him like hot potato, promptly suspending him from primary membership. NK SINGH • An elderly pilgrim to Ujjain is beaten up, publicly humiliated and forced to clean his faeces with his own hands after he is found relieving himself on the ghats of Kshipra river. The Ujjain municipal corporation employees upload the video on social media as part of their “public shaming” campaign for making the town open defecation free. As they film his humiliation, they chuckle, asking the old man to show his face to the camera. • As part of their “public shaming” exercise, Narsinghgarh municipal employees try to film a teenaged girl when she goes out to answer call of nature.
