NK SINGH In my long career as a journalist I have met nearly two dozen chief ministers in various states of the country. But there was no one like Bhairon Singh Shekawat, the former chief minister of Rajasthan. My first meeting with Shekhawat, who later on became the vice president of India, will remain etched in my memory forever. It was early 90s. I had landed in Jaipur in connection with a story about the BJP-ruled states in the country. I sought an appointment with the chief minister. I was asked to come at 8.30 to his official residence for the interview and also join him for breakfast. On the appointed day and time I was outside the CM House in Jaipur’s Civil Lines locality. When a General fights an election NK SINGH छपे हुए प्रोग्राम के मुताबिक़ सुबह ७ बजकर ५५ मिनट पर चित्तौरगढ़ से भाजपा उम्मीदवार जसवंत सिंह का क़ाफ़िला चुनाव प्रचार के लिए रवाना होनेवाला था। और ठीक 7.55 बजे अपने सुपरिचित सफारी सूट में उम्मीदवार महोदय उस दिन का चुनाव अभियान शुरू करने के लिए चित्तौर के सरकारी सर्किट हाउस में अपने कमरे से बाहर आए। बरामदे में उस वक़्त ह म केवल पांच लोग  थे। मैं था, एक फोटोग्राफर थे, जसवंत सिंह की गाड़ी के ड्राइवर थे और चुनाव इंतज़ाम में लगे भाजपा के दो कार्यकर्ता थे। सिंह ने पूछा , " और लोग कहां हैं?” " वे आ रहे हैं ," कार्यकर्ता चिंतित नज़र आ रहे थे। " लेकिन ह में 7.55 पर निकलना था। कोई बात नहीं, हमें निकलना चाहिए। " उम्मीदवार ने कहा। जसवंत सिंह ने एक चौथाई सदी से भी पहले फ़ौज की नौकरी  छोड़ दी थी.  लेकिन फ़ौज ने उन्हें कभी नहीं छोड़ा। वह अपनी राजनीतिक लड़ाइयाँ फ़ौजी तरीक़ों से लड़ते थे। हताश पार्टी कार्यकर्ताओं ने उन्हें मनाने की कोशिश की। "हम गांवों के रास्ते ठीक से नहीं जानते है...

At the appointed hour Singh, dressed in trademark safari suit, came out of his room at Chittor’s government circuit house to start the days’s election campaign. In the veranda only five of us were there. Me, a photographer, a driver and two party workers. “Where are others”, asked Singh. “They are on their way,” mumbled the embarrassed workers. “But we were supposed to start at 7.55. Let us go,” said the candidate. Jaswant Singh, who would later become India’s Defence, Foreign and Finance Minister, had left Army a quarter century ago. Jhunjhunu's Rani Sati temple lands in controversy NK SINGH आखिर महिला संगठनों के विरोध से जो काम नहीं हो पाया उसे अदालत के एक आदेश ने अंजाम दिया। अदालत ने और जरूरत से ज्यादा मुस्तैद प्रशासन ने। देखने को झुंझुनूं के राणी सती मंदिर के चौथे शताब्दी वर्ष का आयोजन बेखटके हुआ। पिछले पखवाड़े मंदिर में विशाल यज्ञ मंडप भी बना। उसमें वाराणसी से आए50 ब्राह्मणों ने नौ दिन तक शास्त्रोक्त पद्धति से महाचंडी यज्ञ भी किया। प्रांगण में बने 350 कमरे दूर-दूर से आए दर्शनार्थियों से खचाखच भरे थे। लोगों का आना-जाना वैसे ही चलता रहा। स्कूली ट्रिप पर ‘मास्साब‘ के साथ आए बच्चे, मनौती पूरी होने पर बच्चे का मुंडन कराने आए मां-बाप, और दूल्हे की धोती के छोर से बंधी नवविवाहित दुल्हन। फिर भी आयोजन फीका रहा। वजह थी राजस्थान हाइकोर्ट का 27 नवंबर का आदेष जिसके तहत अदालत ने मंदिर के प्रबंधकारिणी ट्रस्ट को इस अवसर पर मंदिर में नया स्वर्णकलश  स्थापित करने, चुनरी समारोह करने या ऐसी किसी भी गतिविधि पर पाबंदी लगा दी थी, जिससे सती महिमामंडित होती हो। इस आदेश के बाद मंदिर के बाहर बनी दुकानों से चुनरी ही गायब ...

NK SINGH Politicians will consult any astrologer or tantrik, even one who claims to deduce the past and predict the future from a plastic bucket full of milk. That's the modus operandi of Balti (bucket) Baba, who has suddenly emerged as a colourful sidelight in Rajasthan politics.  The 40-year-old semi-literate man with a Bihari accent, unkempt hair and dirty clothes boasts: "There is not a single politician in India who has not consulted me." Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhairon Singh Shekhawat met Balti Baba before the recent assembly elections. Says the Baba: "The string of rudraksh brought by him was short by seven rudrakshs and I had told him he will be short by seven MLAs." Although Shekhawat denies visiting the Baba regularly, he has reportedly been advised on the timing of his oath-taking ceremony and even the number of ministers he should appoint to his cabinet.
