Image
  Kamal Nath is going out of way to prove he is not anti-Hindu MP Assembly Election Update: 14 October 2023 NK SINGH

Sanjay Singh Masani MADHYA PRADESH Chouhan's brother-in-law leaves BJP to join Congress NK SINGH

Dainik Bhaskar 13 November 2018 A political pilgrimage from Communist Party to BJP NK SINGH

Prajatantra 8 May2019 Bhopal, the new lab of Hindutva NK SINGH

Bhopal, Hindutva's new lab

Image
NK SINGH The BJP has made Bhopal the epicentre of its Hindutva ideology by fielding terror-accused Pragya Singh Thakur as its candidate for Bhopal Lok Sabha seat. A BJP bastion for the past 30 years, Bhopal has suddenly become the venue of one of the most interesting electoral and ideological battles in the country. Thakur’s candidature took even many by surprise. The BJP has no dearth of tall leaders in Madhya Pradesh to challenge Digvijaya Singh, the Congress candidate from Bhopal who was the state’s chief minister for a decade. They have hugely popular Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who ruled MP for a record 13 years.  Charismatic Uma Bharati, who trounced Singh 15 years ago, is still around.  So is former CM Babulal Gaur, who holds the enviable record of representing Bhopal in the state assembly for 10 terms, winning the seat every time with an increased margin. Yet, the BJP chose Thakur, facing trial in a case of terror bombing aimed against religious minorities....

Resilience in difficult times

Image
NK SINGH Bhopal has emerged as the epicentre of BJP’s Hindutva ideology. And the new mascot of this ideology is the feisty Pragya Singh Thakur, an accused in Malegaon bomb blast case who has now become the BJP MP from Bhopal. With the BJP recapturing power with a thumping majority on ultra-right nationalist plank, how do Muslims feel about the election results? I talked to a number of Muslims in confidence, on conditions of anonymity. These included serving and retired civil servants, corporate honchos, businessmen, architects, journalists and social activists. These are powerful people with influence in the society. These are people whom others, both Hindus and Muslims, approach to solve their problems. I found a sense of despair. But I also found a belief in the resilience of India’s composite culture. The response was probably not surprising in a community that has gone through it all - post-Partition trauma, resurgence of fanaticism in early 90s and a history of dev...

In Madhya Pradesh, bureaucrats are forever

NK SINGH The decision to appoint Sudhi Ranjan Mohanty as the new chief secretary of MP, was taken soon after the Congress returned to power in MP. However, the new government refrained from posting him as Officer On Special Duty, waiting in the wings to take over as CS, as has become customary in recent years.  Mohanty was himself averse to the idea of moving into the hot seat early. Hence official orders were issued at the last hour even as many kept guessing.  But some people did not want to keep guessing. The moment Mohanty's name started making rounds as a probable candidate for the top post, they tried to sabotage his chances.  Soon after the change in the government, Congress president Rahul Gandhi's office started getting petitions to stop Mohanty's appointment as chief secretary, according to a source in AICC.  But those petitions failed to stop Mohanty's resurrection. Apparently, the new Government wanted to make amends for the BJP Government'...

Digvijaya: Phoenix rises from the ashes

Image
NK SINGH I 'm not going to fry pakodas," said Digvijaya Singh when reporters asked him what he intended doing after his six-month Narmada pilgrimage earlier this year.  He is certainly not frying pakodas.  Rising like a phoenix from the ashes, he is on the centre-stage of Madhya Pradesh politics once again. As the Congress returns to power after 15 years, the person who benefited the most from the change in political fortunes was Diggi Raja.  Kamal Nath may have walked away with the chief minister's chair, but it is Singh who is enjoying a sudden surge in power and clout.  In the 28-member Cabinet, some say he has as many as 10 ministers. Others put the number at nine. The newly inducted ministers include his son and nephew.  It is an impressive achievement for someone who had been lying low throughout the election campaign. He was not very visible as many in the Congress party feared that if he straddled centre-stage, the BJP would resume its 'M...

Why Congress lost badly in Vindhya

Image
NK SINGH The figures are worrisome for both the BJP and the Congress.  A detailed analysis of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly election results reveals that, if the Congress had cobbled a pre-poll seat-sharing alliance with the other Opposition parties, it would have been in a position to bag at least 155 seats out of 230.  The anti-BJP alliance would have walked away with a clear two-thirds majority. And the BJP's tally would have shrunk to a measly 75.  It is true that the Congress improved its performance by increasing its vote share by four per cent, winning 114 Vidhan Sabha constituencies. But it is also true that it fell two seats short of absolute majority. The Congress's gain was the BJP's loss. Anti-incumbency against the 15-year-old BJP government led to the ruling party losing four per cent of the vote share. It could win only 109 seats.  The Congress made impressive gains in all geographic sub-regions of the state, including the BJP citadel of ...
