Frontier 23 July 1977 Madhya Pradesh : A Captive Chief Minister NK SINGH  During the recent bickering on the issue of ministry formation, the erstwhile socialist group alleged that the Chief Minister, Kailash Joshi , was a captive chief minister acting on the dictates of the   Jana Sangh ‘caucus’. If he is, no one but the socialists are to blame  for it. At the time of the election of the leader of the Janata legislature party, the socialist support was instrumental in tilting the balance overnight in the favour of the Joshi, a Jana Sangh man. His only opponent, V.K.Sakhlecha , also from Jana Sangh, who was going very strong at the moment, had to bow out of the contest. That made Joshi, although he was a Jana Sangh man, something of a socialist nominee! NK SINGH For me, Kushabhau Thakre, the former BJP president, would always remain the embodiment of all that is good in the RSS. The man who built the BJP from a stretch in MP was k nown for his Spartan lifestyle.  Like most RSS wholetimers, he was a bachelor.  When I first met him in early 80s, he used to live in a small room that opened on a noisy street in a building that housed the BJP office in old Bhopal. That small room served as his bedroom, office, visitor’s room, dining and guest room.  The furniture conisted of a wooden cot, a couple of chairs and an earthen pitcher ( ghada ) for drinking water. He used to share a table fan with his neighbour, Kailash Sarang, the office secretary, whose family would use it whenever Thakre did not need it.  Some time he would invite me for lunch to that room. The food, a very simple affair, came in a thali from Sarang’s house. This was the life style of a man who could make or unmake a chief minister. ...

NK SINGH Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s political career started quite early. According to his official website, he fought for farm workers of his village when he was just nine. As president of his school union in Bhopal, he learnt the ropes at 16. A year later, Government detained him under draconian MISA during Emergency. Shivraj became the youngest person to be arrested under MISA and underwent rite of passage in Bhopal jail, where he spent nine months in the company of senior RSS leaders. His political opponents call him Ghosna Veer ---- announcement warrior. The derisive Hindi term conjures up image of a Don Quixote, a knight in shining armour, out to save his subjects by creating a canopy of announcements to shield them from Unhappiness. Sample this. In the first ten years of his tenure he made nearly 8,000 promises. The average comes to more than two announcements a day. During the last three years, as he settled in his job, the speed slowed down --- onlyy 1,500 announcements, at the rate of 1.3 per day.
