एमपी इलेक्शन: सर्वे की कोख से निकली लिस्ट

Image
  Kamal Nath is going out of way to prove he is not anti-Hindu MP Assembly Election Update: 14 October 2023 NK SINGH

Digvijay Singh's politics of Band, Baaja and Bhajan

Image
Will Narmada pilgrimage help Digvijay politically? NK SINGH His political pot shots have earned him an anti-Hindu image. He is a favourite hate target for the saffron brigade. But few know that Congress leader Digvijay Singh is a deeply religious man, a devout Hindu. He probably practices more rituals than all housewives of Madhya Pradesh, the State he ruled for 10 years, combined together. He observes most fasts prescribed in scriptures. He goes to Vrindavan for the 24 km foot march around holy Govardhan hill almost every year. Once, as chief minister, he had taken his entire cabinet to Mathura for the ritual, many of them returning with blisters on their feet. He never misses a chance to visit famous temples during Navratri. He keeps going on annual pilgrimage to Pandharpur in Maharashtra. As he enters 71st year of his life, Singh has embarked upon yet another pilgrimage. But this time his pilgrimage has generated controversy. Skipping the traditional Dussehra puja i

Controversy over appointment of new Lokayukt in MP

Image
Deciphering the Lokayukt controversy NK SINGH Governments are notoriously slow. Take for example MP’s long haul search for Lokayukt, the ombudsman against corruption in higher echelons of governance. After a two year long gruelling search, Madhya Pradesh Government has finally discovered a worthy successor to Justice PP Naolekar. The Government found Naolekar so indispensible that it changed law to give him an extension after completion of his six year term. A special cabinet meeting amended MP Lokayukt and Deputy Lokayukt Act to allow the incumbent to continue in office till Government finds a replacement or for a period of one year. The Government failed to find a successor to the great man for more than two years. Governments can also be amazingly swift. Take for example last week’s appointment of a new Lokayukt. Once the MP Government selected Justice NK Gupta, it moved at breakneck speed. The head hunting and appointment materialised in 13 days flat! The collegium o

Farmers get Rs 2 as crop insurance in MP

Image
Why every five hours a farmer commits suicide in MP? NK SINGH Madhya Pradesh was the first State in the country to implement NDA Government’s much-touted Prime Minister Crop Insurance Scheme. At the time of its launch last year, farmers were promised the moon. Politicians made them feel that if they buy this insurance, it will be panacea to all their problems. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself came to MP to launch the scheme at a massive function organised in Sehore, the home district of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Explaining salient features of the scheme to farmers Modi declared at Sehore: “It is a historic decision; Even if he happens to be the only farmer who has suffered losses (in that village), he will still get benefit of the insurance scheme.” It turned out to be just another jumlebazi. Buoyed by the Prime Minister’s promise, 36.40 lakh farmers bought insurance for their kharif crop last year. Their heightened expectations were crushed to gro

Why Chouhan needs to travel by road?

Image
MP CM thinks roads in his State are better than US NK SINGH Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan believes that roads in Madhya Pradesh are better than US. His statement is not a case of political rhetoric. The man who has ruled MP for 12 years seems to sincerely believe that. After declaring in Washington DC that roads in MP are better than US, he saw people at the meeting smiling. He grinned, "I am not saying it just for the sake of it” and went on to explain how his government had constructed 1.75 lakh km of roads in the State. His Bhakts also believe that MP roads are superior to US. As the CM’s statement triggered an avalanche of jibes on Twitter, his party and Government rose in spirited defence. A spokesman of MP BJP released a series to photographs to prove that roads in MP are indeed better. The state Government too released photographs to counter the ridicule. It contrasted the State's swanky looking roads with potholed roads in New York and Los Angeles. C

Is MP Govt going to kill Ola and Uber?

Image
Changes proposed by MP Transport Department may throw application based taxi aggregators out of service NK SINGH Madhya Pradesh Government wants to control and regulate application based taxi aggregator services like Ola and Uber. The Principal Secretary of Transport Department has published a gazette notification inviting objections from public about proposed amendment to Motor Vehicles Act by November 13. The new rules are being framed under the garb of helping consumers. No doubt, the aggregators suffer from lacunas like surge pricing and lack of a sturdy grievance redressal mechanism. But the real objective behind the new rules seems to garner more revenue for the cash-strapped government. Worse, the proposed changes may kill the technology-based nascent service, which has come as a boon for urban transport system. The proposed amendments may also push up the cost of operation, ultimately affecting the public. It must be kept in mind that these aggregator services are i

Chitrakoot results send danger signals to BJP in MP

Image
Signals from Chitrakoot NK SINGH The writing on the wall in Chitrakoot by election was clear the day BJP’s star campaigner Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan visited a village in the constituency to spend a night in the house of a tribal. It was the ruling party’s attempt to woe tribal votes. The CM had just returned from US, where he was surprised to discover that the roads in the most powerful nation in the world were inferior to those in MP. Apparently Chouhan was in high spirits as he hit the campaign trail. As a politician, he was at his aggressive best. As we know Chouhan is in election mode 24/7. He enters every election, howsoever small and whatsoever insignificant, with killer instinct. But that night in that village of Chitrakoot, he faced stark realities of his own jumlas ---- and also inefficiency of his administration. The house of the Sarpanch where he was supposed to spend night did not have a toilet. The second house selected also lacked a toilet. An emb

MP bureaucracy rises to challenge, decides 7 cases every minute

Image
Steel frame is rusted, but can still deliver NK SINGH Christmas is time to celebrate. And MP Government has reasons to cheer. Its bureaucracy is in good spirits. Chief Secretary Basant Pratap Singh was a happy man as he went on LTC last week – his first in ten years – after pulling off one of the most stupendous tasks ever undertaken in the annals of State administration. Burning midnight oil, the Government has succeeded in disposing of a record two million revenue cases in just six months. Yes, you heard it right. More than 20 lakh cases over a period of six months, deciding, on an average, 7 cases every minute! The good old steel frame may be rusted, but it is still capable of delivery. “It was part of our special drive to clear pending revenue cases,” says Arun Kumar Pandey, Principal Secretary of revenue department. The drive was undertaken in July after Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had threatened to “hang upside down” District Collectors if they f

Welfare State's money put to good use

Image
Scholarship for meritorious students is Shivraj Govt's best scheme after Ladli Laxmi NK SINGH A decade after Madhya Pradesh launched its flagship Ladli Laxmi scheme, something good and noble has come out of Shivraj Singh Chouhan Government’s stable. The Rs 100 crore scholarship scheme for meritorious students, called Mukhyamantri Medhavi Vidyarthi Yojna (MMVY), puts welfare state’s money to good use. The new scheme’s beauty lies in its simplicity. The Government will fund higher education, including technical and medical education, of meritorious students, irrespective of their caste, creed or gender. Every student scoring good marks in higher secondary examination qualifies for it. Only condition is a ceiling of Rs 6 lakh fixed on family income so that rich don’t benefit from scholarship. It is a well recognised fact that education is the best possible investment in a welfare state’s arsenal to fight poverty. Ladli Laxmi scheme brought a paradigm shift in societ

Minister who eats 60 meals a day

Image
PSUs cost state exchequer Rs 6,300 crore in MP every year NK SINGH A public sector undertaking of Madhya Pradesh Government received a weird order from its minister incharge. The minister desired the government undertaking to supply 60 lunch packets everyday at his official residence. Since then the undertaking has engaged a local eatery for supply of sixty meals to the minister on a regular basis. The PSU officials are amazed at the voracious appetite of the minister and his staff. The minister’s other demands were of routine nature. The minister and his personal staff requisitioned three vehicles from the undertaking to supplement the fleet they are officially entitled to. The same organisation also provides a handful of daily wagers for household chores. Now comes the sting in the tail. The public undertaking in question is running into huge losses. The accumulated losses have wiped off its net worth. The central government body that governs its affa

Racketeering by MP's private medical colleges

Image
Private medical colleges meet their nemesis in MP NK SINGH Racketeering by private medical colleges in Madhya Pradesh has always been an open secret. Anyone with deep pockets could secure admission to medical colleges by paying amounts ranging from Rs 25 lakh to Rs 50 lakh to college owners or their agents. The private medical colleges were allowed to have their separate test and admission process. It was a process designed to be rigged. Racketeering in medical and dental admissions continued because it generated huge funds, a turnover of Rs 800 crore, of course, all of it in black. Everyone was aware of the racket. Owners of these private colleges would often receive phone calls from the high and the mighty pleading for “rebate” in capitation fee to someone close to them. All stakeholders were happy, including those who got to share a part of the loot at election time. Then came Vyapam, the scandal that shook Madhya Pradesh. A part of scam involved rigging of recru
