24 feared dead as bridge falls

Image
NK SINGH Bhopal: Over two dozen labourers, including women and children, were feared buried alive when a 40-foot span of a bridge under construction on a busy thoroughfare here collapsed on Monday. Special army and fire brigade rescue teams. helped by local volunteers, had rescued about six persons, including the construction contractor. from the debris by late night. Except the contractor, all of them are in a bad shape. The authorities were unable to say anything about the fate of the persons buried under the debris. It is feared that most of them were killed. Removing the debris was proving an uphill task although cranes were pressed into service. A crowd of over 5,000 persons had assembled around the collapsed bridge by late night. Power of positive

NK SINGH

I was happily surprised to find a large number of readers appreciating my last week's column published in DB Post of 2nd January 2017. The response has been overwhelming. The article, 'Officers who made a difference in MP in 2017', has already emerged as the most read piece on my site, nksmp.blogspot.com.

This is the power of the positive.

We encounter so much negativity in newspapers, TV and internet, that any positive news comes across as a fresh whiff of air.

The three most read pieces on my site, as of today, are:

No. 1Officer who made a difference in MP, in which I have tried to put togather a list of public servants who made a difference in the lives of people through their work in 2017. Carried in DB Post of 2nd January 2018.

No. 2: My interview with Narendra Modi where he talks about his troubled relationship with VHP leader Praveen Togadia among other things. This was the first interview granted by Modi, who was then Gujarat's chief minister, after he had walked out of a television show hosted by famous journalist Karan Thapar. The longish interview was published by Indian Express in its issue of 1st November 2007.

No. 3MP Government's fatal attraction for TCS, in which I have questioned our mandarins' fascination with TCS despite horrible services offered by MP Online. It was carried as part of my weekly column in DB Post of 18th December 2017.

HOW I MADE THE LIST OF OFFICERS

As I am no expert on governance, I took help of some retired civil servants and police officers. They included half a dozen former chief secretaries and four former director generals of police, whose knowledge and wisdom I respect. Based on their recommendations, I prepared a list.

The list, if you would notice, is a mixed bag. It includes not only senior IAS officers but also a Mining Inspector. It includes people who are persona non grata with the ruling establishment. It includes people who are considered close to the powers that be.

That is the power of our democracy, which thrives on a system of checks and balances.

Even at the time of preparing the list I knew that it can not be exhaustive. There is so much good happening around us! And there is so much to write about those good things!!

Thank you, friends for such fantastic response to a positive story.
