Image
  Kamal Nath is going out of way to prove he is not anti-Hindu MP Assembly Election Update: 14 October 2023 NK SINGH

MP follows in Bihar's footsteps

Image
NK SINGH ·         Sadhna Singh, wife of MP chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, was recently elected president of All India Kirar Kshatriya Mahasabha, an organisation that represents the caste the Chouhans belong to. Shivraj Singh also attended the conference at Kota last month where his wife was elected president. “She agreed to become the president because the samaj leaders told us that it was necessary to avoid a split,” said Shivraj Singh. ·           Former chief minister and senior BJP leader Babulal Gaur gave his blessings to newly-elected Congress MLA from Kolaras, Mahendra Singh Yadav last week when the latter touched his feet before taking oath of office in MP assembly. “You are the honour of the community," said Gaur, adding, “may you win ten more times!” Both politicians, although in opposite political camps, are Yadavs. ·         K art...

Image
When Advani refused to contest election

BHONSALA MILITARY SCHOOL

Image
A Military school. An arms camp. A Shakti cult. All a part of the Hindu right NK SINGH I have never been able to fathom what propelled my father, a man of modest means, to  purloin my mother’s jewellery and admit me to Bhonsala Military School in Nasik. I t was renowned as one of the better-known public schools in the country – one of the seven original signatories to the Association of Indian Public School in 1939. True, its more famous cousins – Doon, Scindia, Rajkumar – were in the top league but BMS, as we used to call it, was also quite expensive. M y father, a lecturer at Trimbak Vidya Mandir, a Gandhian institution, was perhaps trying to compensate for his own lack of formal education. Caught in the whirl of the freedom movement, he had become a khadi worker. And the early death of his father and family poverty in rural Bihar robbed him of the benefits of a formal education. N asik in the early 60s was quite different. And BMS’s campus reminded one ...

Sudeep Banerjee : An Obituary

Image
SUDEEP BANERJEE (1946 - 2009) NK  SINGH IRONICALLY, what   finally broke the ice was TS Eliot’s Wasteland! The atmosphere was a little heavy as Sudeep Banarjee walked into that hotel room to meet the crew of Granda TV, credited with producing some of the finest, award-winning documentaries on the Bhopal Gas Tragedy. The producer, Laurie Flynn, was very tense. He had been waiting for weeks to get permission to shoot the Union Carbide plant. And Sudeep had kept him on the tenterhooks. W hen the two met for the first time --   my friend Laurie and Sudeep -- there was a mutual distrust on both sides. Laurie, almost a card-carrying radical, expected to meet a dyed-in-the wool bureaucrat. Sudeep, a passionate votary of the New World Order, expected an insensitive firnag of “anyone here been raped and speaks English” type. Du ring introduction Laurie was informed that the bureaucrat who had come to meet him was also a poet. But Sudeep, probably, could read the...

Habib Tanvir: A Living Leged

Image
NK SINGH BHOPAL, once described by Indira Gandhi as the cultural capital of the country, on Tuesday night lived up to its reputation. It paid a fitting tribute a Habib Tanvir, one of the most important theatre personalities of our times – a man who has become a legend in his lifetime, and, more importantly for the people of Bhopal, who has made the city home for himself and his equally legendary Naya Theatre.             Habib Tanvir’s Charandas Chor, enacted on Tuesday night at Bharat Bhavan, not only drew a packed house, but the audience turned up in such a large number that the organizers had to install film screen to telecast the play. Bookings for the play closed 45 minutes before the starting time.             It is a very old play- 38 years to be exact. It has been enacted several times in Bhopal, as in many part of the world. Yet, as the octogenarian...

Rewards for votes: “Jo Dega, Wo Lega”

Image
NK SINGH Two news items this week did not get the attention that they deserved. After BJP’s defeat in Mungaoli and Kolaras assembly by-election, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan visited some villages in the two constituencies.  These villages were selected carefully: these were the communities that bucked the trend and voted overwhelmingly for BJP. It was a thanks giving tour by a grateful leader. Chouhan visited Dhodhiya and Gunheru villages in Ashoknagar district on March 4. The helmets were singled out for this privilege because BJP got 490 votes in Dhondhiya as against 90 polled by Congress. Similarly, in Gunheru village his party had secured maximum number of votes. The chief minister showered gifts on the villages – Dhondhiya, Gunheru, Semri and Banjara Chak – that preferred BJP over Congress, as a thanks-giving gesture. “If they have given without restrain,” he declared, “why should I maintain restrain!” The CM was flanked by the defeated BJP candidate...
