Last moment of Two Murderers

Image
NK SINGH This is a study in contrast, of two murderers who were hanged in the Rajipur Central Jail, Madhya Pradesh, recently. Both of them had been convicted of killing their spouses. 38-year-old Pyarelal, sent to gallows on May 1, was every inch a hardened criminal and remained unrepentant till his last breath. While undergoing trial for killing his wife in 1964, he murdered two fellow prisoners inside the jail following an alteration of a personal nature. Both were fast asleep when their heads were crushed by a heavy boulder and an iron bar. Ultimately, Pyarelal was sentenced to death for the triple murder. 28-year-old Budhram was hanged on June 18 for murdering his wife Man Kunwar, 25, and uncle, Bagarsai, 27, when he found them in a compromising position. The murder, obviously committed in a rage, gave him such a psychosomatic shock that he lost his power of speech and hearing, which he regained only when told that he had been sentenced to death. Those Who Worship Godse

Nathuram Godse

NK SINGH

Swara is a Hindi weekly, bearing registration number 16011-67 from Viratnagar in Jaipur district of Rajasthan. It describes Indira Gandhi as communist, calls Nehru “sapper and miner of international communism”, supports Israel and denounces Arabs as enemies of Hindus.

It published a two-page article to prove that Gandhi ji was a sex-maniac, with a six-column headline: ‘Gandhi insisted on sleeping with nude girls’.

Dharmendra Sharma, who is said to be a noted figure of the RSS in Rajasthan, edits this weekly. Sharma has also written a book, ‘Two Mahatmas of India’, in which he calls Gandhi a ‘papatma’ (sinner) and Godse a ‘mahatma’. The book was forfeited by the Government.

Gopal Godse, younger brother of Nathuram Godse, was released from prison in 1964 after serving his term as a convict in Gandhi murder case. Soon after a ceremonial homage was paid to Nathuram, Apte, Gopal and Karkare in Poona at a gathering of 300.

This was attended among others by two top ranking RSS leaders – Abhayankar and Ketkar.

Gopal Godse was invited by the ‘Akhil Bharatiya Adarsha Hindu Sangh’, headed by Dharmendra Sharma, the editor of Swara.

‘Mahatma’ Nathuram

The welcome address eulogised ‘Mahatma’ Nathuram as ‘Arjun of Mahabharata’ and Gopal as the ‘nation’s revolutionary consciousness incarnate’.

It said: “when the anti-national foul deeds of hypocrites who inspired traitors of the country but bestowed the mantle of Mahatma worshipped by the whole world, were going on, then your elder brother Pandit Nathuram Godse took upon himself to accomplish the unpleasant and painful task which Arjun had regretfully to perform in the Mahabharata war.”

The Swara brought out a special issue on 27th December 1969, carrying the whole text of Nathuram Godse’s statement in Gandhi murder trial. A speech of Guru Golwalkar was published supporting the statement.
